In the Low hand there is a need to ‘qualify’. Here the aces are considered the lowest cards while straights and flushes can be used as combinations. So following the rules the strongest hand in the low version can be A2345 while the weakest hand which qualifies is 45678.

The game of 7 card stud poker Hi-Lo begins when all the players place their ante bets. The game starts with the player sitting on the left side of the dealer. Each of the players are dealt three cards, one card at a time, of which two of them are faced down while one is facing up for the others to see. The player who gets the door card with the lowest value starts the bet following which the other players place their bets or fold.

In the next round the player with the highest door card will start placing the bet. Following thing two more rounds of betting takes place where the players are dealt two cards facing up. The amount of the bets being placed gradually increases. In the final round one card is dealt facing up.

In 7 card poker the showdown is divided into two parts – the high hand and the low hand. The player who has the strongest hand wins the high hands bets and the player with the lowest hand wins the low hand bet and the pot is split between them. But a poker player has to ‘qualify’ to win the low hand bet; incase those cases where none of the players ‘qualify’ the winner of the high hand gets the whole amount.

Like anything else in life, how you learn to play poker, the very first steps you take, can determine how well you play and how far you go as a card player.  There are many decisions you have to make when you first set out to become a real good player and a winner.  One wrong step, a trip down a blind alley or taking the wrong fork in the road, can waste a lot of your time and actually form bad habits that will ruin your chances of ever being able to win consistently.

How far you eventually go will be determined by your talent and passion as well as your work ethic.  What seems deceptively simple at first, is actually an intellectual sport that demands the very best from those who would be leaders.  Take the game of Texas Holdem, for instance.  It appears that all you have to do is wait until you get a really good hand, such as a pair of aces, and then just go all in.  Nothing could be farther from the truth.

2. Start with the very basics.  Learn the rules of whichever game you choose.  If it’s Texas Holdem, then learn the rules, how the blinds work, the order or hierarchy of hands.

3. While statistics are helpful, it isn’t necessary to know them all.  On the other hand, learn the probability of drawing an ace.  For instance, if you are at an 8 player table and 4 players are in the pot with you and you’re holding a big slick, an ace and king, you should know what the odds are of another player holding an ace.  Since aces rule, learn the odds of aces first.

4. Once you’ve learned the basics of the cards, learn position next.  How does your position, in relation to where the betting starts and ends, affect how you should bet and whether you should bet?  There are some very good books on these subjects and they will get you started.  Play for fun and learn to watch a pot and the board (the community cards on the table) and get to understand the ratio of reward to risk.  For instance, if you know your chances of winning a pot at 1 out of 3 and you’ve only invested 20% into the pot, that’s a winning proposition.

5. Take time just to practice playing the cards themselves, without giving any thought to the betting and all the nuances until you are a great card watcher and pot watcher.

6.  Once you’ve got the mechanics firmly in your mind and don’t have to struggle to figure out if a situation is profitable, you’re ready to learn the fine points that will make you a great player.  I’m talking about betting.  Learn how to bet from any position with any hand.  This, of course, means knowing when to fold, open, check, raise, call.  

It will take a long time and lots of work to put all this together, but in the end, you’ll be a very good poker player.  It takes a lot of practice.  That means sitting at a table and watching thousands of hands and keeping mental notes that you go over after the games.
