1. Early Position Raise : One of the biggest mistakes I see players make is not respecting someone who raises in early position. Remember he has another 8 people after him at the table who he has to fade, so chances are that he is holding a big hand.

2. Protect Your Hand: Don’t give players an opportunity to draw out on you, make them pay for it. If your holding top pair and there is flush or straight potential, don’t let them get any free cards to draw out on you with. Bet the pot or double the pot as to thin the heard.

3. Thin The Heard: If your holding an average hand, say pocket 10s and there have been no preflop bets yet,, go ahead and make a bet, I prefer to triple the pot. You certainly don’t want the guy next to you who has King Deuce to hit his King on the flop and beat you. Your bet should thin the heard down and will lesson your chances of getting out drawn.

4. Chip Lead: Listen people, if you have the chip lead tighten up a little. There is no sense in getting involved in too many pots. I see it all too often, someone has the chip lead and calls a raise with crap. Then he catches one of his cards and gets committed to the pot and ends up losing 20% of his chip stack to the pocket rockets. You want to hold on to the chip lead, don’t play anything but good cards and let the other players on short stack weed themselves out and you will find yourself at the final table.

5. When you have the nuts and someone betting into you: I was watching a friend of mine play a tournament online and although he made several mistakes that I corrected him on, the biggest mistake he made was pushing someone out of the pot by re-raising him on the turn when he should have slow-played the hand. Let me give you the scenario. My friend Mike was dealt 10-hearts and K-hearts. Someone raises preflop and there are 4 callers including Mike. On the flop came K-diamonds, 10-diamonds, K-spades. Yes, he flopped the dead nuts. The first player checks, the second player who was the original preflop raiser bets 0. Next player re-raises 0, the third and fourth players fold, lastly its up to Mike. He just called the bet which was the proper play. Next card on the turn was 3-spades, no help to anyone. Original player in first position bets 0, second player calls, and what does Mike do, raises the pot 0 and the other 2 players drop out. You need to ask yourself “What am I trying to accomplish with this bet.” What was Mike trying to do, make everyone fold. Number one he has the dead nuts, he already has position so it is imperative to give the other players an opportunity to catch their card. The proper play was to continue letting the player bet into you, then take him off on the river. He might have had 2 diamonds and hit his 3rd diamond on the river and you could have taken all his chips. You want those players to get so committed to the pot that they simply cant lay down their 2 pair or their flush or their set. Remember in no limit poker you can always raise the pot or even go all in on the river so its really quite simple. If your playing NL Holdem and someone is betting into you when you have the dead nuts and are in position, let him continue betting into you and do the raise on the river as to maximize any chance you have at getting most or all of his chips.

6. Common Sense: Common sense supersedes all the advice given to me over the years. Use your head for crying out loud. My friend Mike was on the big blind and there were no raises preflop, so he got to see the flop for free. There were 7 people in the hand and the flop comes A-hearts, K-diamonds, -10-diamonds, now Mike was holding crap, 6-7 off suit. Well nobody bets and it comes around to Mike and he triples the pot. It goes around the table and one guy calls, another raises, then another goes all in. Of course Mike folds but common sense tells me with a flop like that everyone got a piece of it, whether its a gut shot straight or 4 to a flush or just top or second pair. My experience has been that usually players discard their low cards and stay in with their big cards or pocket pairs. When a big flop like that comes up common sense tells me when there are 7 other people in the pot that a few if not all of them caught some part of that flop. What a horrible time to try to buy one. Chalk another mullet move up to MIKEY lol.

7. Play like a champion: Try to imagine yourself at the WSOP final table playing for 1.5 million. Then ask yourself how would Doyle Brunson play the hand. Take your time and you will probably make the right call. Remember skill will only get you so far, you also have to be lucky and not get too many bad beats to snap a big tournament off so don’t get discouraged if you made the right play and lost the hand. If you played the hand like Doyle would have played the hand and you get a bad beat, well that’s just part of poker so you might as well get used to it now.

8. SURVIVAL . Your goal of course is to snap the tournament off, but your first priority should be to get into the money. Just use your head and play smart.

9. Study Your Opponents: Study your opponents and make note of their tendencies. For example, if you have a player that calls just about anything, obviously it would not be wise to try to steal a pot against him as he will probably call you with his low pair. Conversely, if you have a player like that and you have a strong hand, bet more than you normally would as you will probably get a call out of him unlike if your playing against a good player that would probably fold his average hand.

10 . Realize The Amount Of Players Left In The Tournament And Where They Stand In The Money: If your in a tournament that pays the top 9 places and you have 11 people left in the tournament, this may be a good time to steal a couple of pots if your in position. They are trying to get into the money and wont risk their chips unless they have a premium hand. On the other hand, once everyone is in the money, if your going to play a hand make sure it is one where you are willing to risk a large part of your chip stack on. My experience is when it gets down to the money players, you see many people on the short stack going all in so although it may be tempting to play that 9-10 suited, it may not be a hand you want to risk a large amount of chips on.

How to Bet
A bet is a declaration that you have a good hand. When a player raises, they are proclaiming they have the best hand and theyll wager money on it. Typically, players are supposed to raise when they have a good hand and those who have a bad hand are suppose to fold. If everyone stuck to this policy, there would be no need for any strategy. However, most players play contrary to this idea and attempt to be cunning and deceptive. The following descriptions are strategic plays:
Blind-Stealing: When you are on the dealer button and only you have the blinds are left, a raise is often called blind-stealing. This may cause the blinds to fold, stead of simply checking. This strategy will never make you rich, but ends the game fast so you may be dealt a new hand (and adds a few chips to your stack).
Blind stealing is a tremendous tactic within a tournament game, especially when the blinds become very high.
Steal-Raise: If you are the last to act and all players have checked to you, a simple raise can limit the number of active players or take the pot. This move is only recommended if youve hit a piece of the flop and want to see where you stand.
Check-Raising: The act of checking to your opponent with the intention of luring them to raise, so that you can reraise them back. Your intention is to lure them to feel secure about their hand and betting so you can reraise back at them. For example, I was in early position and was holding AQ and the flop came down as Q-A-A. I didnt want to scare anyone out of the pot so I checked and waited for someone to bet. My opponent bets, and I raise him back with a substantial amount that kept him thinking for a minute.
The Opener: Raising when youre first to act. This strategy is used to limit the number of players and is an information bet (usually players with strong hands will call). Many will fold, but the ones remaining will either be equally aggressive or truly have a good hand.
Squeezing: Raising when suspecting another player or players may be on a draw (players looking for a straight, flush, etc). Raising discourages players taking a chance on their draws. For example, I was holding a suited hand J10, and the flop came down as 2-A-8 with two clubs on the community. One more club would have gave me a strong flush possibility, but my opponent bet a strong amount that wasnt worth gambling if I didnt hit my flush.

Poker Tells
A habit, behavior, or physical reaction that gives other players information about your hand or play is called a tell. Most poker pros pick up on tells to determine if their opponent has a strong hand or straight out bluffing. A player may also use false tells to fool players.
The Eyes Never Lie: Many players cant help but stare at big hole cards at a longer period of time. If a player is looking to steal the pot, he may look to the left to see the number of active players remaining for an opening bet (See How to Bet). People rarely can look someone straight in the eyes while being dishonest.
Facial Expressions: Showing unhappiness in your face indicates that your hand is weak. Confidence indicates you have a strong hand. Also, facial ticks or nervousness are signs of weakness.
Weak is Strong and Strong is Weak: When a player has a monster hand, they usually pretend to act disinterested in playing that hand saying phrases like, “Oh, is it my turn?” or “I guess I will play this hand.” Covering up for their strong hand.
Trembling and Shaky Hands: A byproduct of anxiety, nervousness usually represents a monster hand.
Glance at Chips: A quick glance at their chips after the flop, turn, or river indicates a plan of attack, usually meaning they have a strong hand. But beware, some may use this tactic to scare you off.
Peeking at Hole Cards After Flop: Typically, players peek to see if one of their cards are connecting a flush draw or a straight draw.
Body Language: Dropped or slumped shoulders indicate weakness and sitting up right or being very attentive indicates strength. Leaning forward indicates an aggressive player, but remember, strong is weak and weak is strong.
Chip Stacking: Loose-aggressive players(maniacs) have sloppy and unorganized stacks. Tight-conservative players keep neat and well organized stacks.

Bluffing 101
Bluffing is used to deceive other players into thinking you have a better hand when you really dont. In order to make the bluff work, you need the other players to think you actually have a better hand by betting or raising.
Bluffing should be done at the right time and done sparingly. Remember, everyone is looking for their own opportunity to bluff. Here are some reason why you shouldnt bluff.
When Not to Bluff
Players Expect You to Bluff: You were caught bluffing and now labeled as a poor bluffer. Dont stick you hand in the cookie jar until you rebuild your reputation as an honest player, then try to bluff later.
Against Too Many Players: The chances are that someone has a made hand and theyll stick with it.
Against Bad Players: Bad players have no idea whats going on. Theyll call you regardless, because they arent concerned with what you have. They want to improve their own hand, so theyll call just about anything.
You lost a Series of Hands: Players will expect you to make some crazy moves to make your money back (playing on tilt). Theyll be ready to call you down.
Again, bluffing should be used sparingly. Here are some scenarios where a typical bluff should be taken into consideration:
The RIGHT Time to Bluff
Against Weak or Tight Players: Once you have a general idea of how your opponents play, your biggest targets would be pounding the weak and tight players who tend to fold easily. However, bluffing too early wont make them budge, they may not believe you have a better hand or maybe holding a strong hand of their own. (Refer to the table image section)
Few Players in the Pot: Its easier to trick a few individuals (1-3) rather than a large group. Fewer hands out there, the chances of someone making a reasonable hand are slim.
Everyone has checked and youre last to act: Betting will force a few players out of the pot, but not all (also known as squeezing). Its pretty common to see someone bluff and bet on the button, so most of the time players will call because they wont believe you have the better hand. Its also a good strategy to see where you stand.
Players Fear You: If you won a hand through a good play, and see your opponent a bit aggravated or show respect by commenting on your hand, then trick them in the future by running the same play that beat them. They will more likely fold to your bluff if you play it right.
Semi-Bluffing
A semi-bluff is a partial bluff with some truth in that play. With a semi bluff, you can either win by them folding right then, by improving to the best hand, or by catching a scare card and betting out on the following round. You should have general knowledge of calculating odds before attempting a semi-bluff. Here are a few examples of when to semi-bluff.

Texas Hold ‘em is a poker game that is quite popular. There are tournaments held all over the world, such as the World Series, Celebrity Poker, etc. and it is now watched on television. It is the simplest poker game to learn for the beginner. Every player plays a seven card hand if they stay until the end. The first two cards are dealt face down. The five remaining cards are dealt face up and are common to all of the players. The first three are turned up at one time and are called the Flop. The fourth card is called the Turn and the fifth is called the River. These are placed in front of the dealer in the appropriate spot on the layout on the poker table.

Out of these seven cards, the player makes the best five card poker hand. Ace is high card (unless used in a low straight), deuce is low card. The winning hand is the best five card combination. From high to low the winning combinations are given below:

Straight Flush consists of five cards in numerical order of the same suit. If the straight flush is ace high it is called a royal flush. A five – six – seven – eight – nine of hearts is a straight flush. A ten – jack – queen – king – ace of hearts is a royal flush.

Four of a Kind is four cards of the same numerical value, each having a different suit.

Full House consists of three of a kind and a pair. The suit is irrelevant. It is the numerical value of the cards that count here. If you have three fours and two kings, you have a full house.

Flush is five cards of the same suit. The numerical value of the high card determines the rank of the flush. If there are two flushes, one with an ace and the other with a ten, the ace high flush will win.

Straight is where there are five cards in sequential value regardless of suit. The high card determines the rank of the straight. If there are two straights, and one is seven – eight – nine- ten- jack and the other is two – three – four – five – six, the jack high straight will win.

Three of a Kind is where there are three cards having the same numerical value.

Two Pair is where there are two sets of two cards with the same numerical value. For example, one hand has two five and two sevens, the other hand has two kings, and two nine. The hand with the kings will win.

One Pair is where there are two cards have the same numerical value.

High Card is when a hand has none of the above combinations and the hand is determined by the highest card.

Every deal has to have an outcome or a winner and the winner is determined by the rankings of the combinations given above. High hand takes the pot.

The way the game is played is as follows. Each player begins with a certain number of chips. Before the deal, the two players to the left of the dealer, post the blinds. This means they put a certain number of chips into the pot. The first player must deposit half a bet, and the second player must post a whole bet. This is just an amount to create a pot. The chips are placed in the middle of the table where all best are placed. This takes the place of the Ante in the typical poker game. The dealer, called the Button, then deals two cards face down to every player. Every player can look at his two hole or pocket cards if they want to. They don’t have to look. This is followed by a round of betting, begun by the player to the left of the player who posted the second blind. If the player thinks he has a good hand, he bets and stays in. If he thinks his hand is not good, he can fold, or drop out. This is called the Pre-Flop round and the amount of the bet is determined by the house rules. If a player thinks he has a good hand, he can raise the bet. Players can bluff. This is when they act like they have a good hand trying to make the other players think they have a good hand.

When the betting has ended, the dealer will burn the top card. He then turns three cards face up on the table. This is the Flop, the first three cards of the five that will be common to every player. There is another round of betting that begins with the player to the left of the dealer. Again the players can call, fold or raise, depending on their preferences. When the betting ends, the dealer burns another top card, then turns up one card and places it next to the flop. This card is called the Turn and is followed by another round of betting. When the betting concludes, the dealer burns the top card and turn up the last card called the River, which is placed next to the Turn card. Another round of betting takes place.

Throughout this game, players are using all of the available cards to make the best poker hand. They have their two down cards, which nobody but they know, and the five common cards which they combine to make the best hand according to the above rankings. After the final round of betting, the players show their hands by turning up their two face down cards. The player with the best poker hand wins all of the chips in the pot. If there is a tie, the players split the chips in the pot.
